Fluted Forms

A Parametric Facade Design

OVERVIEW

Developed Fluted Facade and building design for $400M bio-manufacturing center over 8-month period.

ROLE

Computational Designer

Lead 3D Designer

TOOLS

Rhino 6, Enscape, V-Ray

Revit

.

CONTEXT

I led all 3D development and designed the variations and details of the facade expressions.

Also known as the Innovation center, this project was a three building (400,000SF) addition to a research and manufacturing campus. The project has been undergoing site approval reviews with community leaders and is expected to move to construction in the next few years.

Buildings B1 and B2, located south of the Bio-campus.

Building A, located north of the Bio-Campus.

The project is expected to move to construction in the next few years following official Site Approvals.

PROCESS

Required a modular panel set with seamless repetition and pattern variation.

The fluted facade systems on the B buildings, south of the bio-campus, were the most challenging design aspect. The task was to develop a set of modular panels that would appear randomized when assembled.

ITERATION

I explored varying fluting ratios, depth, and ordering.

Through months of iteration, testing and reviews we secured approval for a pattern module whose aggregate appeared random enough.
